The frame is made to suit the fabric size which is then edged with masking tape and attached to the frame with drawing pins or staples. From times immemorial they are making small objects with paper mache. However, modern Hardanger fabric is an evenweave cotton material woven with pairs of threads, typically 22 pairs per linear inch in both directions, referred to as '22-count'.

These have just 6 and 8 holes to each inch of fabric, so the holes are quite large, making the designs easy to place and stitch. 11 count and 14 count kits are for the slightly more experienced cross-stitcher. I set this up but found that the process of transcribing each interview in full had left me with an auditory and visual memory of what participants had said.
